WayWORD Festival Invites Young Creatives to Shape the Arts Scene

WayWORD Festival is calling on young people aged 16–25 and students in Aberdeen to bring their creative ideas to life. If you have ever dreamed of organising an arts event or want to dive into the world of creative industries, this is a brilliant chance to make it happen.

Run by the University of Aberdeen’s WORD Centre for Creative Writing, the WayWORD Festival team has spent over five years celebrating literature, poetry, visual arts, music, theatre, and innovative media. It’s a platform for young voices to lead the way, creating and curating events with the support of an experienced team.

It was good experience! I simultaneously got training with teamwork and independent working. I gained skills in Resilience and socialising and definitely grew in confidence.

The festival encourages collaboration and fresh ideas, from author talks to performances and from workshops to panel discussions. This year’s programme will feature live events with BSL interpretation provided by Lesley Crerar, ensuring accessibility for all.

WayWORD organisers are hosting an info session on Tuesday, 4 February, from 5.00–6.30pm at the Sir Duncan Rice Library (room 224). Discover how you can take your ideas off the ground and gain hands-on experience in planning, production, and promotion. Past participants have pursued creative careers, using their festival involvement as a springboard for future success.

Aberdeen’s arts scene thrives on new perspectives, and WayWORD is a chance to bring yours to the table. Whether you are passionate about storytelling, performance, or behind-the-scenes production, this festival offers the tools and opportunities to make a real impact.

I had a fantastic time at WayWORD! Everyone on the committee was so enthusiastic and welcoming, and it was so exciting meeting all the guests backstage. This was my first experience working on a literary/arts festival and I learnt so much about the wider arts world.
