Laura Main gets an honorary degree, Dear Soil seeks composers, and more Aberdeen culture and community
From a 531-year-old papal document earning global recognition to a summer of community street parties, this edition covers a lot of ground, but there’s a thread running through it. Aberdeen’s sense of place, its history, and the people rooted in it are at the centre of almost every item here.
Dear Soil opens music commission call
Aberdeen Performing Arts is seeking two composers or musicians to create new works in response to Dear Soil, an archive of love letters written to the ground, currently housed in a moss-crowned filing cabinet at Light the Blue Festival in Music Hall. Each commissioned artist will spend time with the archive before composing and performing a new piece. The commission comes with a £2,000 fee and technical support from the APA team, with a public performance on 1 October during North East Climate Week at Big Sky Studio, Music Hall. Full details and how to apply are on the APA website.
