Former Lemon Jelly member joins local creatives to build a night of visuals.
Local creative charity, Kin, has been building a really interesting design community over the past few months. They’ve held events to bring together and inspire people working and learning in the sector.
Their next event, Rotate Fest, is a live design project that will culminate in a DJ night, with the focus on the visuals.
Over two days (16–17 September) at The Tunnels, participants, working in teams with creative mentors, will build visual worlds from scratch. A week later on the 24th the emerging creatives will work with Fred Deakin to shape their designs into visuals projected behind him for the DJ night. It’s a one-off event built and shaped by a group of people who’ve never worked together before.
As one half of Lemon Jelly, Deakin has headlines Glastonbury and T in the Park, earning Mercury Prize and Brit nominations along the way. Their albums, with cover art designed by Deakin, sold over a million copies. He has since co-founded the design Agency, Airside.
He’s joined for two evenings of talks by motion designer, Rob Johnson, who is originally from Stonehaven. Johnson has spent over 20 years in advertising, animation and illustration. There’s a chance you saw his illustrations on the famous traffic cone that travelled with the Tartan Army to Boston for the World Cup.
Design wasn’t always the plan
Johnson’s route into design wasn’t obvious. “Being from the North East I was unaware all through school that design was even a thing,” he said. “I left school early with grades for Art and very little interest in anything other than drawing.”
Now he’s back in the city, sharing the bill with Fred Deakin. “Aberdeen has always held a special place for me creatively, and I’m excited to return and share my experience.”
The all-important details
Rotate Fest is open to creatives at any stage, in any discipline. It runs across three dates at The Tunnels: 16–17 September for the design project, and 24 September for the DJ night. Deakin will be on the decks with support from yet-to-be-named local DJs. Tickets and further info are available on Kin’s website.
