Aberdeen emo four-piece with rage on one side, joy on the other.
In the latest of our series of mini-features, we turn the spotlight on TigerDrive. A year ago Poppy, Aaron, Craig and Ben played their first show as TigerDrive. In March they released an EP called PROVISIONAL. This Friday a single follows, and they will tell you themselves that the EP already sounds like a different band, that the sound shifted underneath them over the spring and they are chasing it. Bands this young tend to avoid admitting that out loud.
The single is called Girlfriend Lobotomy. Poppy, who writes the words, chose the title knowing the procedure was inflicted disproportionately on women whose behaviour somebody else wanted changed. The song is about being silenced, and about women losing rights they’d won.

Its B side has a scruffier origin. Freakspurt Henry is named after a man Poppy and Aaron met on a bus, who tried to buy drugs off them, mentioned he was in a band by way of ingratiating himself, and then turned out to be unpleasant. The band call it the uplifting one, but there was never any argument about which of the two should lead the release. Many young bands would have led with the fun one - TigerDrive are built a bit different.
When we asked Poppy where the band wants to be in a year, she didn’t hesitate: another EP, a headline show, bigger support slots. Then, after a beat, “Maybe a European show?” Even for a band only a year old, none of it sounds like a stretch.
The release lands the same night they play Drummonds, first stop on a weekender put on by All My Friends DIY, on a bill with House Proud, Palejoy and Modern History. Tickets are £8.
