HOURS has become one of the most reliable routes into Aberdeen’s hip-hop scene. JusHarry came through HOURS before winning Best Hip Hop at the 2023 Scottish Alternative Music Awards, and FER4Z has since played festivals in Glasgow and had tracks playlisted on BBC 1Xtra.

On 10 October, three more names get that platform. Donz, Neero Noir and WLKR headline a Granite City Showcase at The Cellar on Rosemount, the first of two Creative Scotland-funded HOURS events landing in Aberdeen this year. An open mic slot is also on the bill, if you fancy showing off your flow.

The people behind HOURS

The group was founded in 2021 by local artists Vagrant Real Estate and Jackill. It’s grown into one of Aberdeen’s main platforms for local hip-hop. They offer performance opportunities that don’t require travel to the Central Belt. The pair’s partnership runs beyond HOURS too: Jackill features on nine of the thirteen tracks on Vagrant Real Estate’s Neither Collar Nor Crown, an album released last November bringing together 25 Scottish artists including Iona Fyfe and Bemz.

The group has also run multiple national tours and partnered with organisations including Jazz Scotland, Aberdeen Performing Arts and Hip Hop Scotland. Its work has included pairing live hip-hop with jazz instrumentation at Aberdeen Jazz Festival.

Testing new material live

The open mic slot returns after previous editions proved popular. It’s an excellent low-key way for performers to spit a few bars or preview an upcoming release, rather than debuting it cold at a bigger show. Night’s like this are how Aberdeen’s hip-hop scene keeps producing artists ready to take on bigger stages.
