Out and About: Austentatious at the Tivoli Theatre

Improvised Jane Austen comedy, in period costume, prompted by an Aberdeen audience.

💡
What: Austentatious: An Improvised Jane Austen Novel
When: Sunday 28 June 2026
Where: Tivoli Theatre, Aberdeen
Tickets: Aberdeen Performing Arts

The West End comedy show Austentatious comes to Aberdeen on 28 June for a single Tivoli date as part of a brief Scottish tour. The show has been running in London and on the road for years, picking up a devoted following and a string of awards along the way.

The format is this: the audience supplies a title, and the cast improvises an entire Jane Austen novel around it, in period costume and with a musician scoring the whole thing live. Every performance is different, the story built from scratch each night on the basis of whatever title the crowd throws up.

Structure chaos

The show draws on a shared stock of Austen conventions and comic devices, with scenes that connect, loosely, into a full narrative arc. It’s less free-form chaos than it might sound: the cast work from a deep familiarity with the source material, which gives even the wilder tangents something to push against.

Threading through all of that are the sharp, plot-specific one-liners that the cast generate at a pace that takes some believing. The live musical accompaniment adds another layer, with the musician responding in real time to wherever the story goes.

Tickets for the Aberdeen date are already limited.
