‘The Best Girl In the World’ turns childhood baggage into big laughs
Sophia Wren is one of Ireland’s fastest-rising comics. Having performed on the country’s biggest comedy stages, she is taking her new show The Best Girl In the World on tour, with the first stop being the Aberdeen Comedy Festival on 2 October. She has won the comedy competition Show me the Funny and was a finalist in So You Think You’re Funny at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Sophia delivered an hour of laughs and well-set-up punchlines, bringing her chaotic Fringe show to the Lemon Tree.
After appealing for any ‘witchy woo astrology girlies’ to begin taking revenge on the men in their life in increasingly unhinged ways.
Delving into her past, she reflected on childhood abandonment issues and how they led her to becoming almost like a dog begging for adult approval. Always trying to gain the most attention. Before talking about being a mother and how she hopes her daughter doesn’t turn out like her and her attention-seeking ways.
The performance was energetic and at points frenetic. However, it all makes sense when the punchline lands.
I found the show incredibly funny and was engaged the whole way through. Sophia’s storytelling is very good, being serious when she needs to and perfectly delivering hysterical punchlines every time. The show has a good mix of stand-up jokes, storytelling and crowd interaction with an unlucky member of the audience being picked on for the entire show.
Speaking to an audience member they said that this show was the best of the 4 comedy shows they had seen during the Aberdeen Comedy Festival.
A great up-and-coming comedian who we will no doubt be seeing on bigger stages in the coming years and hopefully back in Aberdeen soon.
Aberdeen Comedy Festival, which came to a close yesterday, saw record audience numbers, welcoming over 17,000 fans over 15 days. You’ll be happy to know the festival will be back in 2027 from 20 September to 3 October. As always, we’ll keep you in the loop.
