Jazz composer and saxophonist Sam Newbould will bring his acclaimed Quintet to Aberdeen’s Blue Lamp on 10 April, part of his first-ever Scottish tour.

Originally from Yorkshire but now based in Amsterdam, Newbould is celebrated for his distinctive narrative style, seamlessly blending storytelling with vibrant jazz compositions. The performance at the Blue Lamp is part of his UK-wide tour marking the release of the Quintet’s third album, Homing.

Inspired by an unexpected meeting with a Polish homing pigeon, the album reflects Newbould’s experiences living abroad and explores themes of identity, belonging, and the shifting nature of home. “Unlike the homing pigeon, my feeling of home isn’t tied to a place anymore,” he explains. “Instead, it’s about relationships, experiences, and moments. That’s what this album—and this tour—is all about.”

Newbould promises that the live show will offer audiences more than a traditional jazz performance, blending humour, powerful musicianship, and emotional depth. “There’s an energy and joy in our live shows that we hope is for everybody—jazz fans and non-jazz fans alike,” he says, adding that the music ranges from lively, upbeat tunes to darker, introspective moments.

Joining Newbould on stage will be an impressive lineup of internationally acclaimed jazz musicians: Bernard van Rossum on tenor saxophone, Xavi Torres on piano, Jort Terwijn on bass, and Guy Salamon on drums. Together, they deliver a compelling blend of jazz-influenced by European and global styles.

The Sam Newbould Quintet has earned praise across Europe for their inventive live performances, and this tour offers Aberdeen music lovers the rare chance to experience their celebrated sound in an intimate setting. Newbould sees the visit as a personal milestone, saying, “Scotland has always had a special place in my heart. I’m so excited to bring my original music to these incredible venues.”

Tickets for the show at the Blue Lamp on 10 April are now available online directly from the venue.
