Nine performers pick through the wreckage Shakespeare left at the end of Macbeth

Thrice picks up after the last body has hit the floor. Macbeth is dead, the country is wrecked, and nine performers, grouped as three trios, are left to work out what comes next. The words once spoken by soldiers and tyrants are handed instead to the figures Shakespeare kept at the edge of the stage, and the piece uses them to challenge the persecution carried by the word “witch.”

The title comes from the witches’ incantation in Act 1, which also supplies the arithmetic:

“Thrice to thine, and thrice to mine,
And thrice again, to make up nine.”

Macbeth, William Shakespeare

Who’s making it

Al Seed makes physical and visual theatre, most recently Plinth, which toured in 2023–24. He co-directs Thrice with Judith Milligan, the Paris-based director he made The Shadow of Heaven with, a movement reworking of Paradise Lost. Choreography is by Lina Limosani, an original member of Australian Dance Theatre who has been commissioned by the Australian Ballet and the New Zealand Dance Company. A previous piece for Al Seed Productions, The Spinners, was nominated for a Total Theatre Award.

Guy Veale has written the music and sound design, with lighting by Alberto Santos Bellido and costume by Zephyr Liddell. The company describes the result as a choral ritual built from movement, dance, text and original music.
