Aberdeen Art Fair Returns for a 14th Year

Walk into Aberdeen Music Hall at the end of August and you’ll find more than a huge amount of original artworks under one roof: painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, glass and jewellery. Prices start around £50 and run up into five figures. That range of prices is important. It means a student picking up a first proper print and a collector after something substantial are browsing the same room, at the same time, for the same reasons.

Now in its 14th year, Aberdeen Art Fair takes over the Music Hall from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August.

Who’s showing up

The exhibitor list mixes established Aberdeen names, among them Peacock Visual Arts, Gallery Rosemount and Hard Ground Printmakers, with independent artists from further afield and a good number of first-timers to the city. Members of Aberdeen Artists Society feature heavily too, so there’s a strong local thread running through an otherwise international line-up.

One inclusion we think is worth pulling out is Create Aberdeen, a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, will show work in the Rondo Room. It’s a small line in the programme, but it puts their work in front of the same buyers as everyone else in the building, no separate section, no caveat.

What the weekend looks like

Friday evening is the preview, 6pm to 9pm, with wine tasting on offer. Saturday and Sunday run 10am to 5pm. Entry is free throughout, including the preview.

Beyond the browsing, there’s the chance to talk to the artists themselves, family activities running across the weekend, and a free wrapping service if you do end up buying something and need to get it home in one piece.

Gerry Muldoon, Director of GM Events Ltd, said the aim each year is an event where “everyone from first-time buyers to experienced collectors can enjoy discovering original contemporary art.” Whether you leave with something on the wall or just an afternoon spent looking closely at other people’s work, it’s a low-key way to spend a weekend in the middle of the city.
