FINE Residency to Support North-East Freelance Creatives
The residency brings together like-minded creatives for a weekend of collaboration and professional development.
For all the freelancers in our community, the Founding FINE Residency offers an exciting opportunity you won’t want to miss. From 21st to 24th March at the Sir Arthur Grant Centre in Monymusk, this residency provides 20 fully funded spots for creative professionals in the North-East to connect, engage, and grow their practice.
Organised by FINE (Freelance Independents North East) with support from Culture Aberdeen and Look Again at Gray’s School of Art, this residency brings together like-minded creatives for a weekend of collaboration and professional development.
The residency offers participants the chance to engage in a curated programme of workshops and activities led by established freelance professionals from the North-East. These sessions will focus on developing creative practices, building a supportive network, and collaboratively creating an action plan for the region’s freelance sector. It’s a unique chance for creatives of all backgrounds and experience levels to share ideas, learn new skills, and get valuable feedback in a welcoming environment.
Building on the success of the State of Independence event, Founding FINE creates a space where freelancers can thrive. The residency offers an opportunity to connect with others, explore new projects, and move beyond the traditional boundaries of creative work. The funding for this initiative, which comes from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, ensures that participants have access to a fully supported experience, covering accommodation, workshops, and catering.
An access fund is also available to assist with transport and care costs, making the residency as inclusive as possible. The venue is wheelchair accessible, and organisers are happy to discuss any specific access needs to ensure a comfortable and welcoming experience for all participants.
Hayley Durward of Culture Aberdeen highlighted the residency’s importance: “By providing a fully funded space for hands-on workshops, creative exploration, and meaningful networking, this residency addresses identified challenges faced by freelance creative workers. It offers a rare and valuable opportunity for freelancers to connect, collaborate, and push the boundaries of their practice.”
Sally Reaper of Look Again shared her connection: “As a freelancer myself, I know the challenges and triumphs of independent creative practice. I've seen firsthand the passion and determination of its founding members to create a network that genuinely uplifts freelancers in the North-East"
The Founding FINE Residency addresses the challenges faced by freelance creatives by providing a nurturing space for connection, experimentation, and collaboration. It aims to inspire cultural innovation and build a stronger, more inclusive freelance sector in the North-East.
