Rallying Call for The Belmont Cinema’s Revival
Local voices are strongly urging MSPs to support vital funding for the beloved cinema.
Local leaders, from business moguls to cultural advocates, are joining forces to advocate for the Belmont Cinema’s refurbishment in the Scottish Budget. In a collective effort to revive a treasured city landmark, they are championing this cause both as a renovation of a cinema and as a revival of Aberdeen’s heart, urging the Scottish Government to recognise its potential to invigorate the city’s economy and culture.
The community-led drive, spearheaded by key personalities like Jacob Campbell and Murray Dawson from The Belmont Cinema, along with leaders from various sectors such as Russell Borthwick of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce and Sophy Green of Instant Neighbour, emphasises the cultural, educational, and economic potential of reviving The Belmont Cinema.
Their letter argues convincingly for its essential role in Aberdeen’s ongoing urban renewal and cultural vibrancy.
A Catalyst for Aberdeen's Revitalisation
Situated on the bustling Belmont Street, the cinema is perfectly poised to draw crowds that will benefit nearby businesses and enliven the city’s cultural scene. Advocates assert that modernising the cinema will align with broader economic recovery efforts, positioning it as a cornerstone for Aberdeen’s resurgence.
Our community is clear that the reimagined Belmont Cinema will be more than just a venue to watch the best of domestic and world cinema, but a driver of regeneration, a hub for community creativity and education, and a model for sustainable, inclusive growth in our city centre.

Embracing Sustainability and Accessibility
The renovation plans include state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly technologies and accessibility enhancements to make the cinema inclusive for all audiences. Additionally, a partnership with Station House Media Unit is planned to foster local creative talents, further embedding the cinema into the fabric of community life.
Push for Funding
With substantial funding already secured, campaigners seek the final £1.2 million needed through grants and public support. They encourage community members to reach out to their MSPs, emphasising the cinema’s role in boosting Aberdeen’s cultural stature and economic health as they head towards the budget announcement.
