New Season Brings Fresh Energy to the Lemon Tree

Programme highlights include island storytelling, live music and a festive production

New Season Brings Fresh Energy to the Lemon Tree
New signage at the Lemon Tree marks a fresh season of live music, theatre and storytelling

There’s always something brewing at the Lemon Tree, but this new season feels like a proper refresh. With the building spruced up and the team clearly in an imaginative mood, and as part of Aberdeen Performing Arts’ wider support for culture across the region, the programme brings together local stories, bold ideas and familiar faces. It’s grounded in what the Lemon Tree does best, while still trying a few new things along the way.

One of the most distinctive additions is Delve into the North Isles, a February weekender shaped by the creative voices of Shetland and Orkney. The programme spans live music, film, food and spoken word, exploring how island life inspires art.

Festive storytelling for families

In December, A Land Beyond Winter will transform the building into a festive world for children and families. It’s the first in a new series of commissioned shows developed with Eden Court and Capital Theatres, focusing on collaborative seasonal storytelling.

Live music remains a mainstay, with Frank Turner (21 Sept), GUN (11 Dec), and a double bill from Jesca Hoop and Rachel Sermanni (7 Dec). Comedy fans can catch a wide range of shows during Aberdeen Comedy Festival (22 Sept to 5 Oct).

The venue will also debut the new Aberdeen Queer Arts Festival, a four-day celebration of LGBTQ+ artists running from 6 to 9 November. The programme will feature performance, poetry, music and more, highlighting queer creativity in the North East and beyond.

The people behind the programme

“From old friends to first-timers, we’re always looking to welcome new and innovative talent,” said Ben Torrie, Director of Programming. “The Lemon Tree holds special memories for so many of us. This season brings a mix of creativity, community and a bit of ambition.”

Recent building work includes a new stage floor, seating, access system and updated fire equipment. Outside, the venue has been repointed and repainted, with new signage now in place. A fundraising scheme invites people to sponsor one of the 25 steps between the Lounge and Studio for £200, supporting creative work across the North East.
