Michael Hautemulle Brings New Thought-Provoking Work to Arkade Gallery

We’re always excited to share news about Aberdeen’s vibrant arts scene, and even though we’re on holiday this week, we couldn’t resist bringing this one to your attention. We love shining a light on the smaller, intimate shows that often fly under the radar, and Bodies at Rest, a solo exhibition by Michael Hautemulle at the Arkade Gallery, is exactly the kind of event we want to share with you.

Until 7th October, this exhibition is an intriguing exploration of rest in all its forms. Hautemulle examines how rest can be stillness, recovery, or even stagnation and death. Her work questions how we value our time, energy, and bodies, exploring the fine line between love and labour. The use of every day and contrasting materials invites viewers to experience different aspects of rest and reflect on how these states affect their own lives.

Love, Labour, and Where They Meet

Hautemulle’s background as a sculptor and foundry technician adds a unique depth to her work. Her hands-on experience with heavy materials like cast iron juxtaposes with the delicate nature of jelly and hay, creating a tangible representation of the balance between exertion and relaxation. This blend of textures serves as a metaphor for the tension between love and labour—posing questions about when our efforts become acts of passion versus obligation.

With a Master of Fine Arts from the Glasgow School of Art and international exhibitions in Amsterdam, London, Aberdeen, and Glasgow, Hautemulle brings a wealth of experience to this introspective exhibition.

A Welcoming Space for Art

Tucked in behind Marischal College, Arkade Gallery offers a warm and inviting atmosphere that always offers a warm welcome. The space’s intimate setting complements the themes of Bodies at Rest, providing an environment that encourages up close interaction with the work.

As an artist-driven space, Arkade Gallery allows viewers to experience Aberdeen’s vibrant art scene on a human level, making it an ideal location for Hautemulle’s exploration of rest and equilibrium. The exhibition is an opportunity to connect with the artist’s narrative and the broader conversations around rest and labour.
