Johanna Basford Leads the Charge for Clan’s BookBench Trail

Scottish illustrator Johanna Basford has been announced as the first artist to design a sculpture for Clan Cancer Support’s 2025 BookBench Trail. Known for her intricate black-and-white designs, Basford has sold over 25 million adult colouring books worldwide and was awarded an OBE for her services to art and entrepreneurship. Originally from Auchnagatt in Aberdeenshire, Basford’s design will be the first of many unique BookBench sculptures to be displayed across the north-east, Moray, Orkney, and Shetland next summer.

Her artwork is set to be unveiled early next year, and Clan Cancer Support is inviting other artists to join her in this creative journey. The trail aims to bring a sense of wonder and connection to local communities while raising crucial funds for the charity.

It’s a huge honour to be part of The BookBench Trail, bringing a little fun and creativity to the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland next summer whilst supporting a wonderful charity like Clan.

Submit Your Design for the Trail

Clan Cancer Support has officially opened applications for artists to submit their designs for The BookBench Trail, with the deadline set for December 6. Artists are encouraged to let their creativity shine by submitting up to two designs. The selected artists will have their creations featured alongside Johanna Basford’s, offering a unique platform for emerging and established artists alike.

Fiona Chance, an experienced Aberdeen-based artist, will be the trail’s art consultant, guiding and supporting artists throughout the design process. Her extensive experience with sculpture trails will be a valuable asset to anyone taking part. Full details on how to apply and download the artist pack can be found on Clan’s website.

Community Impact Through Art

The BookBench sculptures, which are 1.4 metres wide and can seat two adults, are designed to symbolise Clan’s commitment to listening and support. This interactive public art trail will encourage reflection on wellbeing while connecting communities through creativity. After the exhibition, the sculptures will be auctioned off, with proceeds directly supporting Clan’s essential work.
