Hairspray Will Leave You Dancing in the Aisles
Hairspray at His Majesty’s Theatre is a dazzling mix of humour, heart, and show-stopping 60s rock that blew away expectations.
Look, I love a show. And when a Broadway hit comes to Aberdeen, it always grabs my attention. When I heard Hairspray was coming to His Majesty’s Theatre, I’ll admit, it wasn’t at the top of my list—especially with my son’s school production still fresh in my mind. But wow, was I wrong. This show is fantastic.
The performance starts strong, but it’s the way it builds, act by act, that truly pulls you in. The stage design evolves right along with it, cleverly balancing the storytelling elements of the show with the big, high-energy dance numbers. It’s a production that keeps you invested from start to finish, perfectly weaving humour, heart, and 60's rock.
By the end, the theatre was electric. There were moments when people were literally on their feet dancing, and that kind of atmosphere is exactly what you hope for when you come to a show like this.
While Hairspray was written in the 1980s speaking to the struggles in the 1960s, its themes of tolerance and acceptance resonates strongly today, especially after recent events across the pond. That said, this is far from a preachy moral tale–it’s an uplifting, feel-good production that entertains.
As for the cast, Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad is a comedic powerhouse, and his duet with “husband” Dermot Canavan will leave you in stitches. Freya McMahon shines as Penny Pingleton, and Michelle Ndegwa’s vocal performance is pure magic—you’ll be speechless.
I had a great time, I think you will too.
It’s here at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen until 25th January 2025, and trust me—this is a show for everyone. Whether you’re a die-hard theatre fan or just looking for a fun night out, Hairspray is well worth the visit.
