Feel-Good Musical Hairspray Heads to HMT this month
Starring Strictly star Joanne Clifton, the feel-good musical is packed with laughter, catchy songs, and a powerful message.
Aberdeen is about to get a blast of 60s fun as Hairspray hits His Majesty’s Theatre this January. Running from the 21st to the 25th, this much-loved musical promises big laughs, catchy tunes, and a story full of heart to liven up the winter season.
The show stars Strictly Come Dancing champion Joanne Clifton as Velma von Tussle and Brenda Edwards (Loose Women, We Will Rock You), who not only takes on the role of Motormouth Maybelle but also makes her directorial debut. Edwards, a veteran of multiple Hairspray productions, collaborates with acclaimed director Paul Kerryson (Chicago, Sweeney Todd) to bring a fresh perspective to this iconic musical.
Featuring beloved hits like Good Morning Baltimore, Welcome to the 60s, and You Can’t Stop the Beat, Hairspray combines high-energy dance routines with a powerful message of tolerance and inclusion. Set in 1960s Baltimore, the story follows Tracy Turnblad, a big-dreaming teenager who dances her way onto the Corny Collins Show. Using her newfound platform, Tracy becomes an advocate for racial integration, proving that anyone can make a difference with enough determination—and a lot of hairspray.
Ben Torrie of Aberdeen Performing Arts, said: “Hairspray is irresistibly fun, uplifting entertainment and the perfect way to banish those January blues. With a show that loves to celebrate big hair, big hearts, and big dreams, you’ll be bound to leave with a big smile on your face!”
Since its debut in 1988, Hairspray has wowed audiences worldwide, winning eight Tony Awards on Broadway and four Olivier Awards in the West End. This latest production brings the same joy and spirit to Aberdeen, making it a must-see event for musical theatre fans.
Tickets are on sale now from Aberdeen Performing Arts or by calling the box office. It’s a great excuse to shake off the winter blues and enjoy a night at the theatre.
