Doric Love Actually and All-Male Ballet Among HMT's New Shows

Aberdeen venue announces four productions running from April 2026 through February 2027.

A Doric version of Love Actually, relocated entirely to Cove and performed in Doric, arrives at His Majesty’s Theatre next April as part of the venue’s newly announced 2026–2027 lineup.

Cove Actually, the Aberdeen Student Show for 2026, takes the multi-strand romantic comedy structure and transplants it to the granite city. The production covers relationships between best friends, families, and football fans, all connected by their relationship with Aberdeen itself. The Student Show recently won a Scots Language Award and runs from 22–25 April 2026.

The script takes an affectionate yet knowing approach to the city, working with local landmarks and legends while poking fun at them. It’s the kind of production that only happens when you hand creative control to people who actually live somewhere, rather than touring companies passing through.

Ballet with a twist

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, known as “The Trocks,” performs on 19–20 June 2026 as part of the UK Dance Consortium programme. The New York-based company has spent 50 years perfecting an unusual formula: all-male dancers performing classical ballet, with each taking on dual personas as both ballerina and danseur.

The performances spoof classics whilst requiring genuine technical skill. What distinguishes the Trocks is that the comedy relies on excellent dancing and sharp timing, not just the visual gag. Tutus, false eyelashes, and prima ballerina attitudes feature heavily, but the company’s amazing technique keeps it from being a novelty.

The touring productions

Annie arrives from 3–8 November 2026, staging the Depression-era musical with its catalogue of familiar songs, including “Tomorrow” and “It’s A Hard Knock Life.” Dirty Dancing runs from 2–6 February 2027, bringing the film’s story of Baby and Johnny to the stage.

Ben Torrie, Aberdeen Performing Arts’ director of programming and creative projects, noted that “the Student Show is always a highlight of the year at HMT” and called the Trocks “incredibly exciting” for how they send up classical ballet whilst paying homage to it.

Tickets go on sale to Friends of Aberdeen Performing Arts on 8 October, with general sale starting 9 October. You can book through aberdeenperformingarts.com, phone 01224 641122, or visit the box office at His Majesty’s Theatre or the Music Hall.
