Celebrate the Gaelic Language with Seachdain na Gàidhlig
This year’s celebration will bring people from Scotland and beyond together to celebrate and promote the Gaelic language.
Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week) is back for its fourth edition, from 24 February to 2 March. With the theme Ceanglaichean gun Chrìch (Building Connections), this year’s celebration will unite people across Scotland and beyond to embrace and promote the Gaelic language through exciting events.
Over 60 groups from all corners of Scotland and even further afield have received funding through the Small Grants Fund, supported by Bòrd na Gàidhlig. These events aim to celebrate Gaelic culture and heritage while strengthening the connections within local communities and diaspora groups.
One of the standout events will take place at Aberdeen University on 1 March. The Sequamur: Gaelic Play-in-a-Day workshop, led by actor Artair Donald, offers participants a unique opportunity to dive into Gaelic theatre. Attendees will have the chance to perform Sequamur, a play by Donald S. Murray, translated into Gaelic by Catrìona Dunn.
The play, which delves into the impact of World War I on communities, will be brought to life through a collaborative, bilingual approach. No previous experience is required, making it a perfect introduction to Gaelic theatre for both beginners and those who speak the language. You can book your spot on EventBrite.
In addition to performances and workshops, Seachdain na Gàidhlig encourages everyone—whether fluent or new to Gaelic—to get involved. People can host their own events, activities, and celebrations promoting the language and its culture. Individuals, community groups, and organisations are invited to add their events to the World Gaelic Week website, helping to expand the reach of the celebration.
Also returning is the Say a Gaelic Phrase Day this Thursday, 27 February, which engages thousands of people online each year. This fun initiative invites people to learn and share Gaelic phrases, creating a shared experience for those wanting to learn the language in an accessible and enjoyable way.
Seachdain na Gàidhlig has steadily grown in popularity since its inception, and with more than 170 events taking place in 2024 across locations like New York and Nova Scotia, it’s clear that the festival’s reach is expanding. The programme for 2025 will build on this success, offering even more opportunities for people to connect with Gaelic through digital assemblies for schools, which will engage thousands of students from across Scotland.
For those interested in celebrating Gaelic in their own way, or simply curious about participating in the events, the full list of activities can be found on the Seachdain na Gàidhlig website. Whether in-person or online, this is an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the growing appreciation of the Gaelic language and its cultural significance.
