Big Belmont Bash Marks Summer’s End With City Centre Street

An afternoon gathering packed with food, games, live music and rare cinema tours.

Big Belmont Bash Marks Summer’s End With City Centre Street
The Big Belmont Bash has been a fantastic addition to the city centre calendar.

If you’re not quite ready to let go of summer, the Big Belmont Bash this Saturday (6 Sep) might be just what you need. From midday to 6pm, Belmont Street and its surrounding lanes will be full of music, food and games. There’s also the rare chance to step inside the Belmont Cinema.

The last Bash back in May landed at a moment when the city was celebrating a Scottish Cup win and welcoming the Tall Ships Races for the first time in almost thirty years. Both brought a strong sense of pride, which spilled onto Belmont Street. It’s a final chance to enjoy the city centre in full swing before the colder evenings set in.

Belmont cinema reopens for tours

The chance to step inside Belmont Cinema is the most distinctive part of this edition. You’ll be able to walk through the projection room and hear talks about the cinema’s past and its possible future. Matt Buchanan, CEO of Belmont Community Cinema Ltd, will share plans and reflections, along with memories from the building’s long history.

The Bash also brings back some of the street activities that proved popular in May, from giant bean bag tosses to prize tombolas. Local businesses are pitching in with vouchers and prizes for games like higher or lower and spin the wheel, adding a playful edge to the afternoon. Music is threaded through the afternoon, with live sets from Stewart Delo, Kaleidoscope, Moody Moody and DJ Yogi. Drummonds is hosting daytime sessions, adding another layer to the sound of the quarter.

Heritage walking tours with Hidden Aberdeen will give a different perspective on the area, while the Robert Gordon’s College Pipe Band will perform. Together, these elements make the Bash feel stitched from different parts of local life, with businesses, musicians, schools and heritage groups all contributing rather than relying on one main draw.

What people value in the bash

Adrian Watson of Aberdeen Inspired said, “The businesses around the Belmont Quarter – Belmont Street, Back Wynd, Gaelic Lane and Little Belmont Street – have rolled up their sleeves and worked tirelessly to put on an event that celebrates the best of the city centre.”

The Bash wraps up before evening, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a moment to share the streets, catch some music, and maybe peek behind the cinema doors you’ve walked past for months.
