The Arts Centre’s August programme shows exactly what makes Aberdeen Arts Centre special. It’s continuously reshaped by the people who use it. Musicians experimenting on open mics, magicians trying new tricks, drama‑makers, quiz lovers, and kids giving things a whirl for the first time. That mix of community, creativity and curiosity has helped keep the building alive for years, and it’s at the heart of those working to preserve it.

Many events this month are connected to the Save Aberdeen Arts Centre campaign. Some raise funds directly, like the quiz night and magic show. Others highlight the kind of low‑key local acts and playful workshops that bring the space to life. The emphasis isn’t on polish or scale, but warmth, local character and inclusive fun.

Dean Friedman and early highlights

The season begins with US singer‑songwriter Dean Friedman on 10 August. With hits such as Lucky Stars and McDonald’s Girl, he’s known for songs full of dry humour and narrative. His performance promises chatty, relaxed storytelling with acoustic pop and humour.

On 15 August, the Save Aberdeen Arts Centre Quiz Night 2 returns with new rounds, raffles and team matching for solo players. It’s followed the next night, 16 August, by Four Magicians—Smith & Burns, Eoin Smith and James Dickson—offering a fast‑paced blend of sleight‑of‑hand, mind‑reading and comedy. The show won the title of best magic show in the UK in 2024.

Silliness and reflection

On 29 August, Sid Ozalid brings 1 Very Silly Old Man with Magical Rhymes to the café stage. Fresh from Brighton Fringe and Belladrum, the show mixes poetry, song, rapid rhymes and even a mind‑reading sock. It’s pitched at audiences aged eight and up, and built around silly surprises and audience interaction.

The month closes with Hamish Henderson, An Artist’s Impression on 30 August. This documentary uses the work of artist Charles Nasmyth to explore the life and legacy of poet and folklorist Hamish Henderson. The portrait‑led film combines interviews, rare footage and personal reflection for a quieter form of storytelling.

Creative learning restarts

Creative Learning sessions restart from 19 August, offering weekly drama and songwriting workshops for both young people and adults. These include Saturday workshops for ages 8–17 and monthly songwriter evenings for those aged 16 and over. They’re low‑pressure opportunities to try things out, explore creativity and connect with others, whether you aim to perform or just enjoy being part of a creative space.

The August programme shows what the Arts Centre does best: centreing community and creativity with a resilient spirit. These events help hold everything together, keeping the doors open and the building in use.
