A new documentary by Aberdeen filmmaker Professor Alan Marcus has been creating waves across the globe, receiving awards and accolades at several international film festivals. Madame Donalda tells the fascinating story of soprano Pauline Lightstone, who performed under the stage name Madame Donalda, and the significant role that Lord Strathcona played in her rise to fame.

The documentary, filmed across Montreal, London, and Aberdeen, delves into Donalda’s early life and career, focusing on how she was supported by Lord Strathcona, a philanthropist and former University of Aberdeen Chancellor. His generous backing enabled her to pursue a world-class education, including studying at the Conservatoire de Paris. Her stage name, Donalda, was a tribute to him, and she became one of the most acclaimed sopranos of her time, performing across Europe and even singing for Queen Elizabeth at Covent Garden.

For Professor Marcus, this project was deeply personal. “I first heard of Madame Donalda from my great uncle over 35 years ago, and it left such an impression on me that I always hoped to tell her story,” he shared. “It’s been an incredible journey to bring her legacy to life, and it’s gratifying to see the film recognised by so many festivals.”

The film has garnered multiple awards, including Best Documentary and Best Editing at the Experimental Dance and Music Film Festival 2024 in Toronto and the Best Classical Music Film Award at the Buenos Aires 11th Music Film Festival 2025. Marcus hopes that audiences are inspired not only by Donalda’s talent but by the passion of Bulgarian soprano Sofia Dimitrova, who helps bring her music to life in the documentary.

Madame Donalda spotlights a remarkable woman whose voice captured the world’s attention. With this recent recognition, it’s clear that this film will continue to inspire and entertain audiences everywhere.
