Aberdeen Arts Centre Launches Scratch That Programme
New performance development programme supports the city's young artistic talent in hand with Scottish Youth Theatre
We love discovering opportunities that push Aberdeen’s creative boundaries. Scratch That is precisely the kind of programme that we find exciting about our city’s performance scene. Partnering with Scottish Youth Theatre, Aberdeen Arts Centre has created a platform designed specifically for performers aged 18–28 who are ready to share their unique artistic voices.
The programme is looking for four original performances between 10–20 minutes, celebrating a wide breadth of creative expression. Whether it’s spoken word that challenges perspectives, musical theatre that tells untold stories, drag that explores identity, or devised work that breaks traditional boundaries, Scratch That welcomes diverse artistic voices from across North East Scotland.
From spoken word to musical theatre, drag artists to cabaret performers, we’re looking forward to supporting new and innovative theatre in our corner of Scotland. Successful applicants will gain access to mentoring from acclaimed writer and director Eilidh Loan, a production budget, and the opportunity to develop their performances in a creative environment – before sharing them on stage right here at Aberdeen Arts Centre.

Transform creative concepts into performance
Each selected piece must be a self-contained performance, designed to be shared on a stage with other artists. This requires you to think creatively about production design, keeping your technical requirements flexible and minimal. The goal is to create a showcase that highlights individual creativity while fostering a sense of collective artistic community.
Successful applicants receive comprehensive support to transform their creative concepts into performance realities. This includes dedicated rehearsal space at Aberdeen Arts Centre, professional dramaturgical guidance to refine your work, and technical assistance to bring your vision to life. A modest £150 budget helps cover production costs, ensuring financial constraints don’t limit artistic potential.
Curated feedback from industry professionals
The showcase event in February 2025 promises more than just a performance. Artists will receive curated feedback from industry professionals and engage with a live audience, providing invaluable insights into their developing craft.
Applying is straightforward. You’ll need to submit a 300-word performance outline explaining their concept, production requirements, and why this opportunity matters to them now. Additional materials like script extracts or images can strengthen an application.
Don’t wait around, the application window closes at 23:59 on Thursday 28th November 2024. It’s a brilliant wee opportunity for Aberdeen’s young creative community to step forward, experiment with your talent, and share your unique artistic voice.
