A relaxed weekend mix of sculpture, painting, print and people-watching in the city centre

We always look forward to the Aberdeen Art Fair. For one weekend each summer, the grand interior of the Music Hall swaps classical concerts for ceramics, oil paintings and the odd abstract goat. The much-loved event is back from 29 to 31 August, with over 750 artworks taking over the city centre venue. It’s free to wander in all weekend.

Now in its thirteenth year, artists, galleries and curious visitors meet again. Some are collectors. Some are just browsing with coffee. Most come because it’s an easy and welcoming way to dip into contemporary art without needing to know your way around it.

What to expect inside

There’ll be paintings, prints, sculpture, glassware, photography, ceramics and more. Some pieces are by artists you might know, others are from across the UK and beyond. Prices begin at around £50, with larger works reaching into the thousands.

There’s no set theme, which means you can wander between wild landscapes, minimalist line work and playful collage in the same space. Many of the exhibitors are new to Aberdeen this year and will be on hand to chat throughout the weekend.

A relaxed way in

Friday evening kicks things off with a free wine tasting and a first look at the work on display. There’s also a creative activity area for kids, a café and bar, and free wrapping if you buy something to take home.

“We’ve got a really interesting mix this year,” says Gerry Muldoon, who runs the fair. “Artists from across the globe, all in one space — and we’re keeping it accessible for everyone.”

Whether you’re buying, browsing or passing time between buses, it’s one of the city’s more relaxed cultural fixtures. Drop by The Music Hall between 29 and 31 August to be part of another big weekend in Aberdeen.
