A ghost story built on scepticism, not screams, arrives in Aberdeen this May.
One person convinced the house is haunted. One person who thinks that’s nonsense. Dinner guests caught in the middle. And a decision to stay awake until 2:22am to see who’s right.
Written by Danny Robins and directed by Matthew Dunster, 2:22 A Ghost Story has an interesting pedigree. Robins also created Uncanny, the BBC podcast and subsequent TV series in which he spends a lot of time taking paranormal experiences seriously and asking awkward questions about them. That sensibility carries into the play. It’s less interested in jump scares than in the friction between people who believe and people who don’t.

Jenny thinks her new home is haunted. Her husband Sam disagrees, and isn’t shy about it. When their first dinner guests arrive, old friend Lauren and her new partner Ben, the evening tips into something more unsettling. The argument keeps going, the atmosphere tightens, and at 2:22am, something happens. What you make of it is left to you.
About the production
The production has been running in the West End for three years across seven seasons, and over 1.1 million people in 17 countries have seen it. For a new play built around a philosophical argument about the supernatural, that’s a significant audience.

James Bye plays Sam, with Natalie Casey as Lauren, Grant Kilburn as Ben, and Shvorne Marks as Jenny. Casey previously visited Aberdeen with 9 to 5, and seems genuinely fond of the place. She said she’s looking forward to seeing “the endless amount of granite they have there again, all the grey buildings made out of beautiful stones that always look wonderful in the light.”
2:22 A Ghost Story runs at His Majesty’s Theatre from 5 to 9 May. Tickets are available at Aberdeen Performing Arts, or in person at the HMT or Music Hall box offices.
