Loved Seeds by Eldin & Love

Loved Seeds is a new exhibition from Look Again in collaboration with We Are Here Scotland featuring the work of Eldin & Love, taking place in a project space over a month-long period.

The exhibition focuses on Aberdeen's flawed history of connections to slavery. It explores how the artists' own identities connect to local sites. This show extends the Quasheba project, a performance using poetry and clay that will be part of the Aberdeen Performing Arts Rise Up festival.

The exhibit aims to take visitors back in time to the lives of an enslaved family in Jamaica in 1832. The family are connected to Aberdeen's Powis Gate, Powis Community Centre, and Jamaica Street. The exhibition runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 29th April to 28th May, from 11 am to 4 pm.

For those unable to attend the opening night, fear not! The exhibition will be open to the public from 22nd April to 21st May, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 11 am to 4 pm.

Rudy Kanhye - Composition with Red and Yellow

The new Rudy Kanhye exhibition at the Look Again project space promises a unique and thought-provoking experience. The show, hosted by We Are Here Scotland, features eight works that reflect the politics of food, decolonisation, and the economy of time through the lens of Mauritius Island, where Kanhye's father is from.

New work is the show highlight, supported by Peacock and Gray's School of Art, called Token Offer. Each visitor is given a modest gift with the effigy of the dodo, the symbol of Mauritius, which they can take home and keep for life or use to activate other works in the show.

The exhibition offers an inventive sharing game centred around consumption, food, and storytelling. By participating in the play elements like the ping pong table and exchange, the visitor enters into a sharing game proposed by the artist. This creates a space to be activated and appropriate by the visitor.

Rudy Kanhye aims to creatively engage with the audience in a unique way. Kanhye encourages visitors to think more deeply about these topics and their relationship to society.

Staff Outing II

Staff Outing II is a brand-new exhibition of works by Gray's School of Art staff. It takes place at the Look Again Project Space on St Andrew's Street.

Speaking about Staff Outing II, Reader in Contemporary Art & Research Lead at Gray's, Jon Blackwood said, "It’s been just over three years since the inaugural Staff Outing exhibition at the Look Again space, which featured staff from the Contemporary Art Practice programme, and Graduates-in-Residence. So much has happened in the intervening time that that show seems from another world, even if it was in the same city and the same space. This time, the CAP staff are joined by colleagues from Painting, and some Critical & Contextual Studies staff, making this a more rounded exhibition showing of current Fine Art practices at Gray’s School of Art.

"At the core of the show is a deep commitment to, and understanding of, materials, and their metaphorical and humorous potential. Regular attenders of the annual RSA exhibition will immediately recognise the works of Michael Agnew, Head of Painting, Derrick Guild, and Lyndsey Gilmour. Michael’s work deals with Scottish folklore and colloquial humour; Derrick’s is steeped in the history of painting and delights in tricking us into seeing the familiar as unfamiliar again; Lyndsey invites us to see more in her abstract, organic patterns in a delicately chosen palette. The painters are also represented by Peter Chalmers who has shown new work both here and in Edinburgh in the past year, Marcus Murison, and Hannah Gibson. Marcus and Hannah are recent Gray’s graduates whose practice develops again through seductive abstraction and expanded painterly installation."

Look Again encourages and supports the growth and development of the creative sector in the northeast. With support from Aberdeen City Council and Creative Scotland, they are based at Gray's School of Art, Robert Gordon University.

Terra Incognita

Terra Incognita (as above, so below) is a multiple styled public art project curated by Miasma and Look Again. It will be a major part of the upcoming Wonderland Festival. It takes place in Aberdeen from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 September.

The project is co-curated by Miasma - Abby Quick and Eryka Aniol. It features exciting new work by 14 visual artists and designers, working collectively as Terra Incognita (as above, so below). Many of the artists are Gray’s graduates.

The project, ‘Terra Incognita’ (as above, so below), imagines curious, magical and uncanny aspects of the city. It gives people the opportunity to explore hidden sides of Aberdeen. Exhibits will include a sacred wishing well, a greenhouse radio station and a swing that is also a knitting machine. It also features a creature made of redundant satellite dishes and artworks created from mycelium fungus, among other things. In addition, there will be a programme of interactive and participatory workshops for the public.

Abby says: “As we look forward to the wider programme within Wonderland, we are grateful for the opportunity to present works and activity in the public space this year with generous support and mentorship from the Look Again team.”

Other artists involved are Ane Smith, Jack Murray Brown, Caitlin Dick, Jared Cameron, Phoebe McBride, Ray Downie, Maria Roman, Caitlyn Main, Saoirse Horne, Astrid Bjorklund, Emily Doherty and Samm Anga.

Look Again Co-Director, Hilary Nicoll said: “It is wonderful to be working with this talented group of artists and designers, supporting them to bring their uncanny take on the city to the public. We’re thrilled to be taking part in Wonderland and to be supporting arts, culture and importantly, creatives, from the region.
